Skully (Ship)
Skully is a unique character in that his primary gameplay gimmick revolves around modifying a limited inventory of modules that affect his default weapon. He does not find other weapons, as other ships do. Weapon drops are instead replaced with the aforementioned modules. When Skully runs out of ammo, the effects of these modules are not lost, but he instead suffers from a 10% damage and 20% fire rate loss (multiplicative).
Skully was originally released as part of the Relics of the Past DLC, which is now included by default with Star of Providence. Originally, Skully's gameplay worked quite differently from the current iteration (implemented in the Into Oblivion update). Rather than the module-based inventory system implemented now, players would find Weapon drops that would modify Skully's stats directly, without any limit to how many modifications the player could make. The original version of the character is documented below and is still available to play on a previous version of the game on Steam.
Story
Skully is of no significance to the plot of the game and any actions taken by him are not canon. Nevertheless, he continues to shape the lives of those that choose to play as him.
Modules
Skully has access to a variety of modules in his modern form, which grant him powers depending on their descriptions and shape. These modules come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, with stronger modules tending to be larger, harder to fit modules compared to their smaller counterparts.
Changes to stats
Into Oblivion Skully retains few of the existing stats from his previous iteration, such as damage, ammo capacity and firing speed, however each module now grants Skully several different effects that have replaced the direct stats of projectiles, pierce and shot speed. Two new stats have also been added: Crit Chance and Crit Damage.
Crit Chance
This stat tracks the chance each individual shot / attack has of becoming a critical hit, indicated by a flash emanating from Skully. These attacks take the Crit Damage modifier and add it onto Skully's default, increasable damage. This stat can paradoxically go over the 100% mark, leading to guaranteed critical hits
Crit Damage
This stat tracks the % increase in damage a shot that is considered "Critical" will deal, most modules that increase Crit Chance will also increase Crit Damage.
Module Sizes
Modules come in four size categories comprising 6 different shapes: a 2x1 rectangle, a 3x1 rectangle, a 3-block angle shape, a 2x2 square, a 4-block T-shape, and a 5-block plus-sign formation. The shape of a module depends on its rarity:

Pre-Into Oblivion Gameplay (Relics of the Past)
Weapons picked up carry permanent keywords and can modify weapon stats. These do not change the base weapon. When ammo is depleted, the player keeps the weapon they have, and simply stays at zero ammo. Damage pickups, Artifact Weapons, and the Artifact Upgrade do not spawn while playing as Skully. Most weapons fire the same way, simply shooting a projectile similar to a revolver, though the look of the shot varies by weapon. Holy Water adds a permanent 5% damage and max ammo to the player's stats.
Stats
Using the starter weapon as a base, the stats of your ammo weapon are multiplied by what you pick up.
Damage
Separate from Damage%, this simply affects the base damage of each shot, which is then multiplied by Damage%.
Ammo Capacity
Affects the number of shots that can be fired before reloading.
Firing Speed
Affects rate of fire.
Projectiles
Affects how many bullets are launched with each shot.
If the player has only two projectiles, they will fire in a V-shaped pattern, negating most upsides of having multiple projectiles.
Damage will be split between projectiles.
Pierce
Determines how many enemies a single projectile can pass through.
Shot Speed
Affects how fast shots travel.

Below is an incomplete list of all weapons upgrades.

Excluded Items
Due to having different weapon mechanics, Skully loses access to some items, listed below:
Trivia
- The module system added in the Into Oblivion update was suggested as an addition by beta tester ZarroTsu, inspired by similar system found in the Megaman Battle Network series. According to Zarro, dev AlexMdle implemented a prototype version of the system in the beta branch by the following day.
- Unlike the Skully enemies, Skully's skullrig (the green part of his "body") is attached to his sprite as opposed to being separate.
