An unused upgrade terminal.
The upgrade selection screen.

Upgrades grant the player's ship a permanent benefit upon being selected from an Upgrade Terminal. When entering an Upgrade Terminal, the player will be given a choice between three upgrades. They may not exit the upgrade menu until a selection is made. Each time an upgrade is chosen by the player, it is removed from the pool of possible upgrades that will appear in future terminals. The player may hold the Map button while choosing an upgrade to see a more detailed description of it.

Each of the first five floors are guaranteed to contain an Upgrade Terminal.

Currently, there are 19 upgrades in the game.

Artifact
ArtifactUpgrade.png "Creates a selection of powerful weapons" Four weapons, each with four Keywords, are generated in the Upgrade Terminal room. Only one of them can be taken.

Additionally, each weapon is blessed. Unique weapons may also be generated, but will not be blessed.
Only applies when playing as ChaosOnly applies when playing as Skully Does not appear for Chaos or Skully.

Autobomb
AutoBombUpgrade.png "Negate damage while on more than 2 Bombs" If the player has 3 or more Bombs and would otherwise take damage from a hit, a Bomb is automatically consumed to negate damage in addition to its normal effects. This cannot negate contact damage. Negated hits reduce Multiplier by x0.5 rather than x1.0. Negated hits still count towards the "times hit" stat on the results screen.

Does not appear on Intense or Sudden Death Lethality.
Only applies when playing as Arena BlasterOnly applies when playing as Armsmaster Does not appear for Arena Blaster or Armsmaster.

Blink
BlinkUpgrade.png "Teleport when dashing" Player can now teleport through enemies, bullets, hazards, and 1-block-wide walls.
Capacity

Only applies when playing as Arena Blaster

CapacityUpgrade.png "Your maximum charge is doubled" The player's maximum charge is now 12 instead of 6. They cannot go further above this new maximum with charge pickups.
Discount
DiscountUpgrade.png "Shop items are 33% cheaper" Price reduction only applies to items in shops, and doesn't affect gambling shops or life shops. Despite the in-game description saying 33%, the actual reduction is 34%, as it seems prices are multiplied by 0.66. The shop discount stacks multiplicatively with the Plug cartridge.

The upgrade also cuts the HP of Special Offer to 666666G instead of the normal 999999G.

Expansion Port
ExpansionPortUpgrade.png "Create a selection of carts, you can pick two" Four cartridges are generated in the Upgrade Terminal room. Only two of them can be taken.
Extra Pow
ExtraPowUpgrade.png "Max Bomb cap +1, Bombs can break walls" Maximum regenerative Bomb capacity is increased by 1, and the player gains 1 standard Bomb if they are not already at 6 Bombs.

Additionally, all Bombs will now destroy blocks in a small radius around the player.
Only applies when playing as Arena BlasterOnly applies when playing as Armsmaster Does not appear for Arena Blaster or Armsmaster.

Focus
FocusUpgrade.png "Provides safety between each hit" Invulnerable time on taking damage is doubled and nearby bullets are cleared once the invulnerability wears off.

Does not appear on Sudden Death Lethality.

Fortune
FortuneUpgrade.png "Better and more frequent item drops" Pickups drop more often on Normal Room clears, and a much wider variety of pickups, including superior versions of the usual normal room pickups, can now drop on normal room clears.
Packrat
PackratUpgrade.png "Empty weapons don't break, gain 20% max Ammo" At 0% Ammo, the player's weapon will revert to its default instead of breaking. Gaining Ammo with an empty weapon will allow the player to use it again.

Only applies when playing as Armsmaster Allows switching into the default weapon if you only have one weapon.
Only applies when playing as ChaosOnly applies when playing as Skully Does not appear for Chaos or Skully.

Plating
PlatingUpgrade.png "Increases Maximum Hit Points by 1/3
Prevents double damage once per room"
Max HP gain is rounded down to the nearest whole number and recovers HP equal to the amount of Max HP raised. Once per room, getting hit by an attack that deals double damage will deal 1 damage instead. Does not protect from Curse of Pain.

Does not appear on non-Mild Lethalities.

Quickening
QuickeningUpgrade.png "Revive on death with extra damage, explosively" Revive with 5 current and maximum health, once. Fires gigalasers, dealing massive damage to all enemies hit upon revival and gives the player a permanent 15% damage increase.

Does not appear on Sudden Death Lethality.

Reserves
ReservesUpgrade.png "+10% Damage, improves default weapon" Damage bonus stacks additively with other damage bonuses. Basic Weapon now deals 2x55% damage rather than 1x100% damage.

Only applies when playing as ChaosOnly applies when playing as Skully Reserves has no effect on the default weapon and simply grants +10% damage.

Salvage
SalvageUpgrade.png "Gain extra rewards when replacing weapons" When taking a weapon while still using a weapon with ammunition remaining, the player now gains double the debris and 1 extra HP or 5% max Ammo in sequence. Salvaging a unique weapon will also grant an extra 5% damage.

Only applies when playing as ChaosOnly applies when playing as Skully Does not appear for Chaos or Skully.

Scanner
ScannerUpgrade.png "Reveals some rooms on every floor, shows enemy HP" Room-revealing effect only triggers upon arrival to a new floor. Reveals the contents of shortcuts before they are opened (such as a Trader Room, Deactivated Machine, or Reliquary), even if the shortcut is not one of the rooms revealed at the start of the floor. Will also reveal the location of keys on the map once the room with the key is visible.
Scrap Runner
ScrapRunnerUpgrade.png "Collecting scrap increases speed and damage" Collecting debris increases movement speed and damage by up to 30%. Effect quickly wears off when hit or not collecting debris. A red meter appears under the money counter that indicates how long it lasts and the amount of increased speed and damage the player has.
Second Wind
SecondWindUpgrade.png "Gain 10 Health, gain 100% Ammo, gain max Multiplier" Excess Health gained through Second Wind will be turned into HP Parts and can increase max Health. Multiplier is set to 3.0x.

Must be purchased from Kleines before it can appear in Upgrade Terminals. Can be toggled on and off via Kleines' shop to insert or remove it from the pool of available upgrades.
Does not appear on Sudden Death Lethality.

Stealth
StealthUpgrade2.png "Enemies take longer to activate" All enemies' normal activation delays are tripled. Damaging an enemy, regardless of whether Stealth is active, will instantly activate them.
Weatherproof
WeatherproofUpgrade.png "Immunity to lightning, frost, and hazards" The player becomes immune to ceiling icicles, spikes, all forms of electricity, water's slowdown effect, and the slowing effect of cold bullets.

  • The Plug cartridge expands the player's options from three to four if they successfully hack the Upgrade Terminal.
  • Renegade can offer a deal that swaps one of the player's current upgrades for another still in the available pool. The upgrade that the player loses will not be placed in the pool again after the deal is made.
  • The Path of Pain, found as a possible branch in the Temple, may contain an Upgrade Terminal as a reward.
  • Shortcuts can rarely contain an Upgrade Terminal, but it will usually be locked behind a puzzle or require the player to take damage.

Trivia

  • Weatherproof was previously known as Voltaic, granting players immunity to electric damage sources, and slowing their movement while traveling through electricity. This was changed in the Relics of the Past update.
  • In prerelease versions of the game, there was an upgrade known as Dexterity that would have allowed you to aim in 16 directions as opposed to only 8. Thankfully, aiming is unrestricted in all playable versions of the game when not afflicted with the Curse of Stiffness, and so the upgrade never made it to release. It can be seen here in a prerelease run uploaded to the Team D-13 YouTube Channel.
  • There exists a miniature HUD version of the Power Eternal upgrade within the game files. It cannot be seen in-game due to the fact that a cutscene will play immediately after selecting the upgrade, followed by the end of the run.
