Kleines portrait1.png "The armor? It styles itself as the Guardian of this place. Heh. What a laughable notion. Clunky, unwieldy, imprecise. Dance around its mace and send it to hell."

Guardian is one of four bosses that can be encountered in Excavation. Its appearance is that of a knight wielding a bullet-blasting mace, which it liberally uses in an attempt to crush its foes.

It is an evolution of the Honor Guard, though players are likely to see Guardian first, as that enemy does not appear until floor 5.

Attack Patterns

Description Video
Guardian's primary attack is tracking the player, slamming its mace into the ground and producing a series of bullets bursting out from the place of impact. The area around the impact will slightly push the player. Guardian will slam its mace 8 times before moving on to one of the following attacks. Guardian attack1.gif
Guardian will lift its helmet and a series of larger bullets will burst from its chest plate in a very predictable swirling pattern. Only the starting direction is random; all the bullets from that point are aimed in relation to where the first bullet was aimed. Guardian Attack 2.gif
Guardian will summon lance-wielding ghosts, that trail across the screen horizontally, first coming from the left and then the right, leaving a trail of bullets behind them. Sometimes the lance ghosts will curve upwards.

The lance ghosts can also be destroyed, and have very little HP.

Hard Mode

Description Video
On hard mode, Guardian will continuously shoot lasers straight downwards during its mace attack. Guardian Attack 1 Hard.gif
In addition to its other moves, Guardian can now summon icicles to rain down on the player with slightly varying angles.

The attack can be angled to the left or the right.

Notes

  • Guardian is unlikely to live long enough to even finish one intermission attack, let alone slam another 8 times afterwards. Despite this, the intermission attacks have a pre-set order in which they will be used (after the first, which is random) with the laser attack always coming after the swirling attack and/or before the lance ghost attack. On normal mode, Guardian simply alternates between its intermission attacks.
